Outdoor portrait of 497 Private (Pte) William Charles McGee and 486 Pte William Charles Rex Mitchell, 3rd Pioneer Battalion beside the ruins of a wrecked house in Armentieres, France. Pte McGee was a 30 year old seaman from Portsmouth, England prior to enlistment on 14 December 1915 and Pte Mitchell was a 32 year old master plumber and fitter prior to enlistment on 24 January 1915. They both embarked for overseas with B Company from Melbourne, Victoria on 6 June 1916 aboard HMAT Wandilla (A62). Pte McGee was wounded in action in June 1917 and spent two months in hospital before returning to his unit. Pte Mitchell was promoted to Lance Corporal and joined the 3rd Australian Division Traffic Control Detachment. They both returned to Australia on 13 October 1919.
