Description

David James Mitchell Munk Stone was born in 1892 at Ballina, New South Wales, one of ten children born to William Stone and Mary Lucy Stone (nee Saunter). Prior to enlistment, Stone was worked as a farmer.

At the age of 22, Stone enlisted in the AIF on 4 August 1915 and was assigned to the 49th Battalion, embarking for Egypt aboard HMAT Warilda on 5 October 1915. In September of 1916 Private Stone and stretcher bearers of 49th Battalion were recommended for a Mention in Despatches for their efforts during the action between the 3rd and the 5th August 1916. The stretcher bearers evacuated over 300 casualties in their section during those two days of fighting.

In September of 1917 Stone sustained a gunshot wounded to his thigh and was evacuated to England. It was during this time that he wrote his diary outlining his activities from 1 January 1916 to 25 October 1917. He returned home to Australia on 15 February 1918 and was discharged from the AIF on the 25 May 1918. On 22 February 1922, David James Mitchell Munk Stone married Sarah Alice Crozier.

David Stone died on 6 December 1967 in his hometown of Ballina at 75 years old.
