Description

Walter Ingelram Balfour-Ogilvy was born on 25 October 1914 at Renmark, South Australia to Walter Mansel Balfour-Ogilvy and Emily Gertrude Bleechmore. In1939 Walter Ingelram Balfour-Ogilvy was living in Goolwa, South Australia and worked as a fireman. He enlisted at Laverton, Victoria on 13 February 1940 and served as a warrant officer for the Royal Australian Air Force. Several members of Walter’s family also served; his father and uncle, Harry Lort Spencer Balfour-Ogilvy, both served in the Boer War and also enlisted for the First World War along with Grahame Balfour-Ogilvy. Walter’s brother, Jack Mansel Balfour-Ogilvy, also enlisted in the Second World War and served with the 2/33 Australian Infantry Battalion, while his cousin Elaine Lenore Balfour-Ogilvy joined the Australian Nursing Service and was serving in Singapore when she died while assisting the injured. In 1943 Walter Ingelram Balfour-Ogilvy was deployed to New Guinea where he served until 1944. He married Freda Lexie Graham on 17 October 1943 at Goolwa and in 1945 had a son; David Balfour-Ogilvy born in Victor Harbor, South Australia, who also enlisted and served in Vietnam. Walter was discharged on 9 November 1945 and returned to Goolwa. He died on 23 March 1983 at the age of 68 and has a headstone at Centennial Park Cemetery, Pasadena, South Australia.
