Flight Sergeant Albert Alfred John Stratford enlisted to the Royal Australian Air Force on 11 September 1939. Between December 1939 and July 1942, he served as an air gunner with 10 Squadron, based in the United Kingdom. With this unit, Flight Sergeant Stratford participated in patrols, transport flights, and reconnaissance over the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea.
