Corporal Norman Harold Furness enlisted in the Second Australian Imperial force on 10 June 1940, after previously serving in the militia. He was posted to 2/22 Australian Infantry Battalion, and embarked for service in Rabaul, New Britain, in March 1941. During his service in Rabaul, Corporal Furness became ill, and was evacuated to Australia in early 1942. He served in Australia until his discharge on 26 October 1945. Corporal Furness later became the President of 2/22nd Battalion ‘Lark Force’ Association, and held that position for over 50 years.
