Description

Two diaries (attached) (May 1916-August 1917) and part manuscript copy covering November 1916-August 1917 of No. 12062 Private S.F. Shearman (9th Field Ambulance). The second original diary covers his service in France and Belgium from November 1916, when he was attached to dressing stations and Regimental Aid Posts directly behind the front lines. It describes his duties which included evacuating wounded from the trenches, transporting them to Casualty Clearing Stations and nearby towns, and driving and maintaining ambulance vehicles. He was stationed mainly in the Steenwerck, Bailleul, Hazebrouck and Armentieres areas.
