Description

Collection relating to the service of Lance Corporal Thomas John McCann, 30 Battalion, First World War. Collection consists mainly of letters from McCann to his fiancee, Edith (Edie), in Australia. The letters cover enlistment; training; sea voyage in 'Port Napier'; Hurdcott and Tidworth camps on Salisbury Plain; and active service in France at 'Bull Ring', Messines and the Somme. Later letters are from No 4 Field General Hospital and No 1 Australian Hospital at Harefield. Collection also includes McCann's explanatory appendices, a paybook, several postcards, certificates, training notes and some speeches.
