Description

Transcript of a diary relating to the First World War service of Captain Clarence Wallach MC, 19th Battalion. The diary dates between 25 June [1915] to 31 December [1915]. It covers Wallach's troopship journey, arrival at Gallipoli in August, fighting alongside Gurkhas and details of action (mostly at Popes Post). The diary also mentions preparations for the evacuation, such as imposed periods were no firing was allowed, and details of the evacuation itself, including maintaining the illusion of continued defence, in particular detail. Also mentions the fear of a party of 100 Turkish soldiers advancing from Malone's Gully. Wallach was part of the rear-guard action covering the withdrawal and was amongst the last men to leave the beach.
