Description

Letters relating to the First World War service of Major Geoffrey Gordon McCrae, 60th Battalion. These letters from McCrae to members of his family span the period January 1916 to his death in July 1916 and cover: return to Egypt from Lemnos in January; recollections on the period preceding the evacuation in December 1915; hospitalisation due to enteric fever with No. 2 Australian General Hospital at Gezireh Palace; convalescence in Choubra; sketches of views outside while in hospital; convalescence in Heliopolis with No. 3 Australian Auxiliary Hospital; sightseeing in Cairo; transfer to 60th Battalion; staging camp at Moascar; departure from Egypt and voyage to France; sketch of the devastated French countryside; last letter on 19 July 1916 talking of leading 60th Battalion into action at Fromelles. McCrae was killed at Fromelles on 19 July 1916. This file contains:
