History / Summary

1762 Private Edgar Cecil Jones was born in Birkenhead, England in 1889. Jones immigrated to New South Wales in 1913 and settled in Ballina. He enlisted with 13 Battalion in January 1915 and embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Shropshire on 17 March. Jones had been serving on the Gallipoli Peninsula for two months when he received a shrapnel wound to his back on 21 July and was evacuated to Malta for treatment. He was later evacuated to Lewisham Military Hospital in England suffering from enteric fever.

After his recovery, Jones was granted a period of leave during which he visited his family in England before rejoining his unit in France on 15 August 1916. After an attack at Mouquet Farm on 30 August, Jones was listed as missing and later confirmed killed in action. He is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial in France.
