Trench art slouch hat with accompanying note
Description
Trench art slouch hat with Rising Sun badge made from shell parts. The slouch hat comes with a contemporary note handwritten on the back of an envelope listing the items that the hat has been made from: 'Crown of hat. Nosecap of British 18 lb shell-. Rim of hat. Shell Case of German 8.9 shell. Rim around hat [puggaree] driving ban[d] of German 13 lb shell. Badge Aus. badge beaten down.' Additional text 'Copper from German aeroplane' has been crossed out. The edge of the hat's brim has been engraved with a zig zag 'sewn' design, resembling the edge of original slouch hats.
