Chronological guide to official records

Pre-First World War (19th century to – 1913)

Records relating to the Australian colonial and later Commonwealth military and naval forces prior to the First World War.

1) Administrative Records

AWM1 Pre-Federation and Commonwealth records

  • Series of miscellaneous items created by various units.

AWM2 Sudan records

AWM3 Records of Department of Defence Central Registry

  • Series of general correspondence files, mainly covers the period 1902-1905.

AWM27 Records arranged according to AWM Library subject classification.

  • Series of files and miscellaneous official papers from former donated records (DRL) accessions and other series. Includes a few items relating to Australian involvement in pre 1914-18 War conflicts.

AWM1 Pre-Federation and Commonwealth records

  • Series of miscellaneous items created by various units. Includes muster or nominal rolls, birth and marriage registers, court-martial books and weekly returns.

AWM2 Sudan records

  • Series includes Sudan Contingent attestation papers, NSW Infantry B and C Companies.
