Why work at the Memorial?

The Australian War Memorial is an exciting and innovative place to work. The Memorial’s world-class exhibitions are housed in the nation’s most revered commemorative site, set in beautifully landscaped grounds at the foot of Mount Ainslie.

Where else in the world can you work in a multi-award-winning institution, among such an extraordinary collection of national treasures, including military heraldry and technology items, priceless works of art, official war records, photographs, sound recordings, film footage, personal diaries and other personal items?

Working at the Memorial also offers opportunities to help commemorate those men and women who have sacrificed so much in the service of the nation.

The Memorial’s employees contribute greatly towards its outstanding achievements, and in return enjoy a satisfying and rewarding work environment, excellent training and development opportunities, and a range of flexible employment conditions.

Our values

The Memorial’s five core values reflect who we are as an organisation and the kind of workplace we aspire to be: Authentic, Caring, Resourceful, Collaborative and Forward-Looking.

We are open and honest in our words and actions

We prioritise physical, emotional and cultural safety in our actions and decision making

We encourage creative thinking, innovation and agility

We work as a team and value the exchange of ideas

We respond to our changing environment and practise resilience

We are accountable and transparent in our decision making

We approach others with compassion, kindness and respect

We share knowledge and skill, and seek expertise

We consult with those affected by our decisions and actions

We help each other grow and seek opportunity in challenges

We trust each other and embrace diversity

We create safe spaces for discussion and exchange of views

We invite constructive feedback and learn from our mistakes

We acknowledge differing perspectives and connect with empathy and understanding

We initiate and participate in critical conversations

We act with integrity and invite questions

We hold each other accountable and address unacceptable behaviour

We work to remove unnecessary barriers and strive to continually improve

We embrace and support diversity and inclusion

We plan for and build a sustainable future

We are sincere and thoughtful in our work

We acknowledge positive behaviour that is aligned with our values

We direct our talents and capabilities to priority issues and critical problem solving

We seek and support mutually beneficial partnerships

These values and behaviours, which Memorial staff identified together, set the expectations we have of ourselves and others. They come from a belief that we all deserve to be able to enjoy work, feel safe, and supported to be our best.

As an imagined ‘fourth wall’ of stained glass windows in the Hall of Memory, the visual design of our values borrows a style and medium that is strongly associated with the Memorial, has strong historical roots, as well as the ‘higher qualities’ that Australians collectively sought to identify with and embody in their experience of war and conflict.

All Memorial staff are required to adhere to the Australian Public Service Values and Code of Conduct, and the Australian War Memorial Code of Ethics Relating to the National Collection.

Work with us

Among the many benefits of working at the Memorial, there is ample free parking, an onsite café (Poppy’s), an active and friendly social club, and proximity to sports grounds and Civic (Canberra’s shopping and business centre).

The Memorial is committed to workplace diversity and maintains an environment that values the contribution of people from different backgrounds and experiences. The Memorial welcomes applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, veterans, mature age people, people from diverse backgrounds, and people with a disability.

To be eligible for ongoing or non-ongoing employment, Australian Citizenship is required.
