Transcribing the Memorial's Collection

Trascribe

Digital volunteering

Volunteer from home with the Memorial's new online transcription tool, Transcribe.

What is Transcribe?

Transcribe is an Australian War Memorial initiative to provide greater access to the Memorial’s National Collection.

Today, the Memorial holds a diverse collection of material relating to the Australian experience of war; and an archive holding extensive official and unofficial documents, diaries and papers, making the Memorial a centre of research for Australian military history.

Transcribe is an online platform that allows the public to transcribe digitised text from the National Collection to ensure their future discoverability and accessibility.

Thank you

The Australian War Memorial would like to extend our gratitude to each of you for volunteering your time and registering to be part of our Transcribe project – transcribing items from the National Collection.

Since the public launch on Wednesday 14th February, the response has been truly overwhelming. In just over 48 hours, more than 1 million words have been transcribed by more than 20,000 volunteer transcribers. This accomplishment stands as a testament to your contributions and the strength of community and collaboration.

As we move forward, further collections (quests) will be added in the coming weeks by the Transcribe team.

We sincerely appreciate your patience as we work to make more collection records available online for transcription.

Transcribe is an ongoing project as there are thousands of diaries and letters that the Memorial is continuing to digitise before being made available for transcription.

Amplify - audio transcription

The Australian War Memorial holds a rich collection of interviews with people who have served in Australia's military forces.

Some of the Memorial’s interview collection has been uploaded to Amplify.

Using speech-to-text software, Amplify creates machine-generated transcripts of oral history interviews which are edited by volunteers.

You can help enrich these historic records by correcting transcription errors as you listen to them.
