Allied prisoners of war repatriated from Japan
Description
Australian and allied POW at Yokohama preparing for repatriation and shots of Australian prisoners of war (POW) on the American hospital ship 'Benevolence'. The footage is low contrast, yet there are close ups of mens' faces smiling to camera (some showing deteriorated teeth), giving 'thumbs up', and wearing striped pyjamas. The following scene shows American and European troops waiting for their ship and looking happy. A large American flag is prominent in one shot; British and Australian flags in subsequent shots. The last scene is of a Red Cross station dispensing donuts and large cups of coffee to the soldiers waiting to go home.
