Description

Collection relating to Sister Emily 'Beryl' Henson, who served with the Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS) during the First World War. Collection includes two original letters handwritten by Sister Henson to her father and her Aunty Evelyn written from Lemnos in 1915. Both letters describe the conditions on Lemnos and the diseases affecting the men and nursing staff. There is also an original letter written to Sister Henson in 1918 from Private J H Rooke of Yorkshire, and a poem titled 'Dedicated to our Sister', written in honour of Sister Henson by patients of the 25th General Hospital, and signed by R Marshall, Black Watch November 1917. Physically added to the collection in January 2013 are typed transcripts of the letters and poem, completed by Christine Bramble in 2010.
