Captain Hugo Throssell

Depicts a portrait of an officer Captain Hugo Vivian Hope Throssel, VC, 1st Australian Imperial Force, 10th Australian Light Horse Regiment. He was awarded the Victoria Cross during operations on the Kaiakij Aghala (Hill 60), at Gallipoli on 29-30 August 1915, and was severely wounded. Returning from the war Throssell denounced war and became a socialist. He married Katharine Susannah Pritchard, the writer. Lambert's images of Light horsemen became well known as tributes to a type of Australian, usually of rural background, who became part of the national mythology during the First World War. The official WWI historian H.S. Gullett wrote of the Australian Lighthorsemen; 'So far as a distinctive type has evolved it is & young men long of limb and feature, spare of flesh, easy and almost tired in bearing'.
