Group portrait of four Officers, some from No 454 Squadron, RAAF. Identified from left: 406387 Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) Eric George Bamkin; Squadron Leader Peter Duggan-Smith of New Zealand; 368 Squadron Leader Ian Campbell; Possibly 405115, Pilot Officer Robert Parkin. Flt Lt Bamkin enlisted with the RAAF in Perth, WA, on 9 December 1940 and flew with No 454 Sqn, RAAF, in the Middle East. He was killed whilst flying operationally, a few minutes after taking off from Gambut 3 aerodrome, 5kms north-northeast of the village of Kambut and 50kms east-southeast of Tobruk. His death occurred on 8 June 1943, he was aged 22. Bamkin is buried at the Tobruk War Cemetery.
