History / Summary
The Australian Active Service Medal (1945 - 1975) was established in 1998 to recognise, with a distinctly Australian award, the service of Australian forces in warlike operations between 1945 and 1975. Veterans of the Korean War, Malayan Emergency, Indonesian Confrontation and Vietnam War all qualify for the AASM in addition to the campaign medals previously issued by the British Commonwealth for these actions. The AASM cannot be issued without a clasp. The clasp 'Vietnam' was authorised in 1998 for all those who qualified for the General Service Medal (1962 - ) with clasp 'South Vietnam', the Vietnam Medal, or the Vietnam Logistic and Support Medal, for service in South Vietnam between 24 December 1962 and 27 January 1973. 27,301 were issued.
