History / Summary
The Australian Active Service Medal (1945 - 1975) was established in 1998 to recognise, with a distinctly Australian award, the service of Australian forces in warlike operations between 1945 and 1975. Veterans of the Korean War, Malayan Emergency, Indonesian Confrontation and Vietnam War all qualify for the AASM in addition to the campaign medals previously issued by the British Commonwealth for these actions. The AASM cannot be issued without a clasp. The clasp 'Malaya' was authorised in 1998 for all those who qualified for either the General Service Medal or Naval General Service Medal with clasp 'Malaya', for service in the Federation of Malaya, or Colony of Singapore, between 16 June 1948 and 31 July 1960. 2727 were issued.
