Description

Collection relating to the Second World War service of 402241 Flight Lieutenant Peter Kingsford-Smith DFC, No. 138 Squadron, prisoner of war, Germany, 1943-1945.

Custom box 1 of 1 - Comprises an album or scrapbook titled 'A Wartime Log', which was given to prisoners of war by the American YMCA. The album was kept by Kingsford-Smith during his imprisonment at Stalag Luft III camp in Germany from 1943 to 1945. The album contains hand-drawn coloured cartoons, sketches and paintings done by fellow inmates at the camp in 1943-1944, lists of German rations and contents of Canadian and American Red Cross parcels, undated black and white photographs of Kingsford-Smith and his family, a summary of his record of service, and several newspaper cuttings. Also included is one page of lyrics attributed to Noel Coward and a letter from the Red Cross advising family members of his status as a prisoner of war, dated 13 September 1943.
