Conflict Second World War, 1939-1945

Collection relating to the Second World War service of 402241 Flight Lieutenant (Ft Lt) Peter Kingsford-Smith DFC who served with the RAAF until he was a prisoner of war (POW) of the Germans. Comprises an album or scrapbook titled 'A Wartime Log' given to POWs by the American YMCA; and one aerial photograph. The album was kept by Ft Lt Kingsford-Smith during his imprisonment at Stalag Luft III camp in Germany from 1943-1945. The album contains hand-drawn coloured cartoons, sketches and paintings done by fellow inmates at the camp in 1943-1944, lists of German rations and contents of Canadian and American Red Cross parcels, undated black and white photographs of Kingsford Smith and his family, a summary of his record of service, and several newspaper cuttings. Also included is one page of lyrics attributed to Noel Coward and a letter from the Red Cross advising family members of his status as a POW, dated 13 September 1943. Additional to the album is an aerial photograph of Stalag Luft III included in the collection.
