Studio portrait of 10794 Lance Corporal (LCpl) Talbert Lawrence 'Bert' Pitman, 3rd Divisional Signal Company, of Norwood, SA. LCpl Pitman enlisted on 20 December 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ascanius on 25 May 1916. He was later commissioned in the field to Lieutenant (Lt) and transferred to the 44th Battalion as Signals Officer. He was awarded the Military Cross for his actions in the Battle of Messines. Lt Pitman was killed in action on 5 October 1917, at Passchendaele, Belgium, aged 26 years. His brother, 17148 Private Alfred Keith Pitman also served in the AIF, with the 11th Field Ambulance.
