Description
7133 Driver (Dvr) John Joseph Monroe, 12th Light Horse Regiment, (12 LHR) (behind dog) posing with the regiment's mascot, a dog named 'Jim' outside the orderly room 'somewhere in the desert'. Dvr Monroe, a butcher of Campsie, NSW, enlisted on 9 June 1915, and originally embarked with Australian Army Service Corps, Butchery Section, on HMAT Themistocles on 15 November 1915. He commenced training with 12 LHR on 15 December 1916 and returned to Australia from Egypt on 28 August 1919 suffering from malaria and tuberculosis. On the back of the photograph is written "our mascot Jim and Sergt Major Gatton outside our orderly room somewhere in the desert".
