Studio portrait of Captain Ralph Raymond Ratnavalu Ekin Smyth (Ekin-Smyth) of the 52nd Battalion. Smyth served in the Garrison Artillery, Infantry and Instructional Corps in South Australia for a total of 24 years in Citizen Forces before his service in France with the 52nd Battalion. He was killed 3 September 1916 in France, aged 41, and is buried at 516 Bouzincourt Ridge Cemetery, Albert, France.
