History / Summary
Associated with the service of 308 Corporal John Dill Reid. Within weeks of the outbreak of the First World War, Reid, a 21 year old poultry farmer from Holdsworthy, NSW, enlisted with C Company, 13 Battalion on 23 September 1914. He embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ulysses on 22 December. After a period of training in Egypt Reid landed under fire at Anzac Cove, Gallipoli at around 9.30 on the night of 25 April 1915. He was killed in action the following day. He has no known grave, and his name is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial. His brother, 4523 Private Marcus Dill Reid, also served with the 13th Battalion on the Western Front; he died of wounds received in action on 13 July 1917 in Belgium. Both brothers' photographs, medals and next of kin plaques are held in the Memorial's collection.
