Description

Studio portrait of Senior Cadet William (Bill) Walster of Junee, NSW, upon his return from England with the Australian 1911 Coronation Contingent. Walster was aged 15 years and nine months at the time and was part of a small group of four or five from Junee, NSW. He is wearing the Coronation Medal. Walster was commissioned in the Commonwealth Cadet Corps with the rank of Second Lieutenant on 28 April 1914. In August 1914 Walster tried to enlist but could not obtain his father's permission. He finally enlisted on 31 July 1915 assigned service number 3465 and embarked from Sydney with the 4th Battalion, aboard HMAT Port Lincoln on 13 October 1915. He returned to Australia on 13 April 1919. Walster also served in the Second World War with the 17 Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps (VDC).
