Horse bit : Lieutenant L C Maygar, 5th Victorian Mounted Rifles
Description
Straight mouth Pelham horse bit with long cheek pieces. The double link curb chain appears to be a modern replacement.
History / Summary
This style of bit is known to be of a type issued to some Australian units during the Boer War. The standard British army Pattern 1885 bit was not generally issued to colonial units there.
This bit was reputed to have been given by Leslie Maygar VC to the owner of a hotel in Longwood, Victoria upon his return from South Africa.
