Studio portrait of 1020 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) Arthur Waring, 4th Light Horse Regiment, of Dulwich Hill, NSW, originally of Thirsk, Yorkshire, England. L/Cpl enlisted on 5 February 1915 and embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Ajana on 31 May 1915. In March 1916 Waring was promoted to company sergeant major with 4 Divisional Signal Company serving in France. He was promoted second lieutenant (later lieutenant) in the field on 10 April 1917. Waring was awarded the Military Cross in 1918 for valuable service in Belgium as Brigade Signals Officer, between September 1917 and February 1918. He returned to Australia on 10 May 1919.
