Description

Informal portrait of WX14734 Private (Pte) Cyril Edward Francis Smith, 2/32 Battalion, smoking a pipe. Prior to enlistment, Smith was a dairy hand of Welshpool, Western Australia, born London, England on 24 December 1909. Smith enlisted at Claremont, WA with 2/32 Battalion on 2 July 1941. After training, he embarked for service in the Middle East, leaving Fremantle on 7 November 1941 and arriving on 24 November. Pte Smith was killed in action on 1 November 1942, aged 32, and is buried at the El Alamein Cemetery, Egypt. This photograph forms part of a commemorative timber shield (held at REL37616) which WX11939 Charles Richard Stouse, 2/28 Battalion, had made in 1945 to honour Smith, who had been a close family friend.
