Description

Shield shaped wooden plaque with a stained and varnished finish. Affixed to the front are, from top to bottom, a brass Rising Sun badge, a small brass decorative photo frame with a wreath of leaves and the phrase 'At Duty's Call', and a brass caption scroll with the engraved words 'In Memory of My Best Pal Cyril Smith 1 November 1942'. The reverse is impressed with the words 'Registered Australia No 20573'.

History / Summary

Relating to the service of WX14734 Private Cyril Edward Francis Smith, a dairy hand of Welshpool, Western Australia, born London, England on 24 December 1909. Aged 31½, Smith enlisted at Claremont, WA with 2/32 Battalion on 2 July 1941. After training, he embarked for service in the Middle East, leaving Fremantle on 7 November 1941 and arriving on 24 November. Private Smith was killed in action on 1 November 1942 and is buried at the El Alamein Cemetery. No details of cause of death are known, nor is it known who made up this commemorative frame and photo.
