Collection relating to the First World War service of 5726 Sailmaker’s Mate Arthur Artemas Waud, HMAS Sydney I, Royal Australian Navy, Australia and the United Kingdom, 1917-1963.

Wallet 1 of 2 – Consists of Part One of the scrapbook diary of Sailmaker’s Mate Arthur Artemas Waud. This portion of Sailmaker’s Mate Waud’s diary contains entries dated between 10 April 1917 and 4 April 1919. It covers the period of Sailmaker’s Mate Waud’s service in the North Sea on HMAS Sydney. In his diary, Sailmaker's Mate Waud writes about his voyage from Sydney to England, being posted to HMAS Sydney I, having leave in London, patrolling the North Sea, weather conditions, training exercises, a ship refit, encounters with enemy submarines, escorting convoys, the explosion of HMS Vanguard, assisting minelaying and minesweeping vessels, hearing of the armistice, meeting with the German Fleet, visiting family, going to hospital with the measles, sightseeing in England and Scotland, and his journey from England to Australia. This portion of Waud’s diary also contains one letter written on behalf of King George V dated 15 April 1919, newspaper clippings, ration tickets, concert programs, photographs, flag identification sheets, and original binding material.

Wallet 2 of 2 – Consists of Part Two of the scrapbook diary of Sailmaker’s Mate Arthur Artemas Waud. This portion of Sailmaker’s Mate Waud’s diary contains brief account of a holiday taken in September 1929, quotes relating to the Armistice of November 1918, a copy of “The Graphic Naval Souvenir”, Waud’s certificate of qualification as a sailmaker’s mate, newspaper clippings, notes relating to the action between HMAS Sydney and SMS Emden in November 1914, postcards, correspondence with The Royal Australian Navy News dated between 1962 and 1963, and original binding material.
