Studio portrait of Lance Corporal (L Cpl) Waldemar Robert Hawkes, 21 Coy Machine Gun Corps. L Cpl Hawkes, of Burra, SA, enlisted on 27 October 1914. He served at Gallipoli, where he was wounded, before moving to the France with his unit in 1916. Wounded again at the Somme, L Cpl Hawkes spent time recuperating in England before rejoining his unit in France. Shortly after his promotion to the rank of Lieutenant, Hawkes was killed in acton at Passchendaele, Belgium, on 29 October 1917, aged 22. Lt Hawkes was buried in the Belgian Battery Corner Military Cemetery, near Ypres.
