Studio portrait of 1806 Private (Pte) Edward Herbert Charles Brereton, 43rd Battalion, of Jamestown, SA. A farmer before enlisting in May 1916, Pte Brereton left Australia for France with the 2nd Reinforcements of the 43rd Battalion in August 1916, and was promoted to Corporal (Cpl) in April 1918. He was severely wounded in the back during the attack on Hamel on 5 July 1918 and died on the ambulance train to the General Hospital at Rouen, age 22.
