Description
Studio portrait of 723 Private (Pte) Roy Hayes Williams, 28th Battalion, of Ballarat, Vic. A signwriter and decorator prior to enlistment, he embarked with D Company from Fremantle aboard HMAT Ascanius on 29 June 1915. Deployed with his unit to Gallipoli in September 1915, Pte Williams was evacuated suffering from influenza later the same month. After convalescing for several months in England, he re-joined his unit in France in June 1916. Whilst taking part in the 28th Battalion's first major battle at Pozières, Pte Williams was killed in action on 29 July 1916, aged 23.
