Identified from left are: 4568 Private (Pte) Clarence Hurtle McGuinness, 32nd Battalion, 4330 Pte Lawrence Anderson McGuinness, 32nd Battalion, and 5619 Pte Horace Victor McGuinness, 27th Battalion. Before enlisting in 1916 the three brothers had owned a fishing plant, and were the sole income-earners for a family of ten. Clarence McGuinness enlisted in October 1916 and left Australia for England with the 12 Reinforcements of the 32nd Battalion in December 1916, arriving in France for service on the Western Front in July 1917. He was killed in action during the German counter-attack on the 32nd Battalion lines at Polygon Wood on 28 September 1917, aged 25. Horace McGuinness enlisted in May 1916 and left Australia for England with the 15th Reinforcements of the 27th Battalion in August 1916. Arriving for service on the Western Front in December 1916, he was killed in action during the 7th Brigade's attack on Malt Trench near Le Barque, France, on 1 March 1917, aged 22, and has no known grave. Lawrence McGuinness enlisted in October 1916, leaving Australia for England with the 11th Reinforcements of the 32nd Battalion in November 1916. He arrived in France for service on the Western Front in July 1917, but in light of the death of his two brothers, was discharged from the AIF on compassionate grounds and repatriated to Australia in March 1918. He died in 1988 in Strathalbyn, SA, aged 91. Individual portraits of Horrace McGuinness and Lawrence McGuinness are held at P07813.002 and P07813.004 respectively.
