Description

Studio portrait of 4330 Private (Pte) Lawrence Anderson McGuinness, 32nd Battalion, of Finniss, SA. A fisherman before enlisting in October 1916, Pte McGuinness left Australia for England with the 11th Reinforcements in November 1916, and arrived in France for service on the Western Front in July 1917. Pte McGuinness was the youngest of three brothers from the McGuinness family to have served in the AIF, two of which were killed in action. In light of the deaths of his two older brothers, Lawrence McGuinness was discharged from the AIF on compassionate grounds and repatriated to Australia in March 1918. He died in 1988 in Strathalbyn, SA, aged 91. A portrait of the three brothers is held at P07813.001.
