Studio portrait of 5619 Private (Pte) Horace Victor McGuinness, 27th Battalion, of Finniss, SA. A fisherman before enlisting in October 1916, Pte McGuinness left Australia for England with the 12 Reinforcements in December 1917 and arrived in France for service on the Western Front in July 1916. He was killed in action during the German counter-attack on the 32nd Battalion lines at Polygon Wood on 28 September 1917, aged 25. Pte McGuinness was one of three brothers from the McGuinness family to have served in the AIF. His younger brother 5619 Pte Horace McGuinness, 27th Battalion, was killed in action during the attack on Malt Trench near Le Barque on 1 March 1917, aged 22. In light of the deaths of his two brothers, the youngest brother, 4330 Pte Lawrence McGuinness, 32nd Battalion, was discharged from the AIF and repatriated to Australia in March 1918 on compassionate grounds. A portrait of the three brothers is held at P07813.001.
