A blacksmith prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 7th Reinforcements from Fremantle aboard HMAT Medic on 18 January 1916. Arriving in France in March 1916, the 28th Battalion took part in its first major battle at Pozières on 28 July. Initially reported as missing after the battle, Pte Mundy was later officially listed as killed in action on 29 July 1916, aged 20. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Villers Bretonneux Memorial, France. Pte Mundy was one of three brothers who served in the First World War. 2944 Pte William Harold (Billy) Mundy, 48th Battalion, was killed in action in France on 5 April 1918, aged 20. 841 Pte Edward Murray (Ted) Mundy, 12th Battalion, survived the war and returned to Australia in March 1919.
