Studio portrait of 3139 Private (Pte) James (Barney) Cowan, 48th Battalion, of Fremantle, WA. A clerk prior to enlisting in November 1916 Pte Cowan embarked from Fremantle with the 8th Reinforcements on board HMAT Berrima (A35) on 23 December 1916. On 24 November 1917 he died in Birmingham General Hospital of wounds received in action at Passchendaele, Belgium. He was 30 years of age. This is one of a collection of eight photographs relating to the Caledonian Soccer Club, Fremantle, WA.
