Studio portrait of Officer Engineer Richard Leonard , Merchant Marine Service, of Fremantle, WA, and his mother. From June 1915 Leonard was a crew member of the transport ship Thistleban which took troops and ammunition to the battle front in Gallipoli and the Balkans. The Thistleban was torpedoed and sunk and Officer Engineer Leonard was transferred to the transport ship Thistleleard which travelled the North Sea delivering ammunition and supplies to Archangel, Russia. On 24 April 1917 the Thistleleard too was torpedoed and sunk. No lives were lost, however, Officer Engineer Leonard subsequently contracted dysentery. He died on 2 July 1917, aged 24 years. This is one of a collection of eight photographs relating to the Caledonian Soccer Club, Fremantle, WA.
