Description

Collection relating to the First World War service of 165a Private Eric Giles Miller, 3rd Light Horse Regiment and 43rd Battalion. Collection consists of an original foolscaped sized notebook containing a hand written copy of a diary kept by Miller from October 1914 to June 1917. The diary covers his embarkation and voyage to Egypt, service on Gallipoli from May 1915 through the August offensive until September when he was evacuated sick to Malta then eventually to England. In November 1916 Miller was sent to France and records his service there until the diary ends in June 1917. Topics described in the diary include fighting in the trenches at Gallipoli, pastimes, weather, horse duties, and movements. He also mentions casualties and fatalities. Of particular note, written at the beginning of the book is a four page entry, dated July 4 1918, describing the Battle of Hamel. The diary has been written in an old ledger type book and contains some hand drawn sketches, which may or may not be by Miller. Other markings of those of children.
