Studio portrait of 5100 Private (Pte) Thomas James Bastian Gard, 16th Battalion, of Charters Towers, Qld. A labourer prior to enlistment, he embarked from Fremantle, WA with the 16th Reinforcements aboard HMAT Shropshire (A9) on 31 March 1916. Pte Gard served on the Western Front and transferred to the 48th Battalion on 21 July 1916. Pte Gard was killed in action on 6 August 1916; he was 20 years of age.
