Description

Studio portrait of Edna Woods girlfriend of 5100 Private (Pte) Thomas James Bastian Gard, 16th Battalion, of Charters Towers, Qld. A labourer prior to enlistment, he embarked from Fremantle, WA with the 16th Reinforcements aboard HMAT Shropshire (A9) on 31 March 1916. Pte Gard served on the Western Front and was taken on strength and transferred to the 48th Battalion on 21 July 1916. Pte Gard was killed in action on 6 August 1916; he was 20 years of age. This photograph was carried in a wallet by Pte Gard; the wallet was sent to his family upon his death, and is now held in the National Collection at PR04400.
