Description

This sketchbook of 29 leaves, containing 58 pages with 29 drawings, was made during the First World War by an amateur artist, probably a serviceman who was interested in depicting the vessels he saw or learned about at sea. In some instances the artist has noted the name of the ship below the image and in other cases the vessels can be identified using the shipping colours, colour of the ship, and the symbols on the funnel. Of particular interest in a depiction of 'The Emden'.

There are depictions of individual vessels that are identified and some landscapes that include areas around the Black Sea, Egypt and Odessa. There are also four depictions of women including two pencil drawings of nurses.

The sketchbook is missing its cover and the paper is a thin and gridded. The pages are attached to a stubb on the left side which is held together by a staple positioned lower centre left. The individual pages have a perforated left side in order that they may be torn out and consequently several pages have become detached from the stubb.
