Description

Studio portrait of 236 Private (Pte) Clive Hobart Butler, 4th Company Machine Gun Corps. A clerk from Fremantle, WA, he embarked, according to his service records, with the 3rd reinforcements, aboard HMAT Seang Bee (A48) on 18 July 1916. Pte Butler was killed by a shell on 22 October 1917, at Ypres, Belgium. He was 36 years of age. Pte Butler had three sons who all served during the Second World War; Ernest Sydney Butler, RAAF; WX5012 Pte Lawrence Mortimer Butler, 2/28th Battalion; and WX3569 Pte Neil Butler, 2/16th Battalion, killed in action in Papua on 8 September 1942.
