Studio portrait of WX5012 Private Laurence Mortimer Butler, 2/28 Infantry Battalion. Pte Butler was captured in Crete on 27 July 1942 and was a prisoner of war for 4 years. He returned home in October 1945. One of three brothers who served during the Second World War, his younger brother WX3569 Pte Neil Butler, 2/16th Infantry Battalion, was killed in action in Papua on 8 September 1942 (see P09654.002). Their father, 236 Pte Clive Hobart Butler, served during the First World War with the 4th Machine Gun Corps. He was killed by a shell on 22 October 1917 at Ypres, France (see P09654.001).
