Description

Collection relating to the First World War service of 5859 Gunner Edward James "Ted" Barnett, 101st Howitzer Battery, 1st Division Australian Field Artillery Brigade, AIF. Collection consists of four original handwritten diaries with detailed entries kept by Gunner Barnett, and written during the period from his embarkation in 1915, following his active service on the Western Front, and through to his return to Australia in 1919. The first and fourth diaries contain observational and humorous sketches. The collection also consists of numerous original handwritten letters (written both to and from Gunner Barnett) during his time on active service; typed excerpts from Gunner Barnett's diaries and letters; fifteen original postcards sent home to family; a Christmas card; a calling card; a concert program; and sixteen photographs. The photographs largely depict Gunner Barnett, his experiences overseas, and his homecoming.
