Description

Tan coloured short sleeved round neck t-shirt with printing on the back and front. Over the left breast is printed in black ink '32' and the date '29-10-11' below. The font used has a deliberate worn effect. The back of the shirt has printed in dark tan 'THEY WENT WITH SONGS INTO BATTLE, THEY WERE YOUNG ; / STRAIGHT OF LIMB, TRUE OF EYE, STEADY AND AGLOW. / THEY WERE STAUNCH TO THE END AGAINST ODDS UNCOUNTED, / THEY FELL WITH THEIR FACES TO THE FOE.' This has been partially printed over a full colour Australian National Flag which has a torn and streaked effect. Over the top of this flag is the silhouette of a helmet sitting on the butt of a vertically aligned F-88A1 Steyr rifle and fixed bayonet. Suspended from the pistol grip of the rifle is a hanging set of identification discs. To the right of the text is the bounding kangaroo over boomerang motif of MTF-3 (Mentoring Task Force 3).
Below the MTF-3 logo are three names; CAPT BRYCE DUFFY / 4TH REGT / RAA, CPL ASHLEY BIRT / 1 TOPO SURVEY SQN / RAE; LCPL LUKE GAVIN / 2ND BATTALION / RAR.

History / Summary

This t-shirt was commissioned to commemorate the murder of three Australian Regular Army soldiers by a rogue officer of the Afghan National Army on 29 October 2011. The three Australian soldiers who were killed, Captain Bryce Duffy, Corporal Ashley Birt and Lance Corporal Luke Gavin, were members of the Combined Team Uruzgan and the Mentoring Task Force 3 (MTF-3). MTF-3's role was to train and mentor members of the Afghan National Army. An Afghan interpreter working with the Australian Defence Force (ADF) was also killed and seven other Australian soldiers were wounded in the incident which occurred during a regular joint ADF/ANA morning parade at Forward Operating Base Pacemaker in Shah Wali Kot located in the southern province of Kandahar. The rogue ANA officer fired a machine gun into the mixed ADF/ANA personnel assembled and he was killed when other ADF personnel returned fire.
