Description
Studio portrait of 1955 Private (Pte) Nicholas Roy Herring, 50th Battalion (right) and an unidentified Corporal. Pte Herring, a fireman from Lobethal, SA, enlisted on 8 January 1915 and embarked from Adelaide, SA, aboard HMAT Hororata (A20) on 20 April 1915. Pte Herring was killed in action at Noreuil, France, on 2 April 1917, a month before his 21st birthday. His brother, 2928 Pte Albert Leslie Herring, also served in the 50th Battalion and survived the war. (See P10461.002)
