Description
The Riqueval entrance to the St Quentin Canal Tunnel, captured on 29 September 1918. This tunnel, which formed a strongly fortified section of the Hindenburg Defence System, was a "huge unhealthy barracks" wherein, it was stated, the enemy could secrete two divisions of men, by means of barges moored along the entire length of the tunnel. The Canal itself also formed a serious obstacle, being deep and wide and honeycombed with dugouts and machine gun posts. The whole system, however, was captured in the general offensive by Australian, American and British troops.
